I Need Some Advice!

I have an appointment tomorrow to get my hair cut with my fabulous stylist, Herman. (Herman is a QUILTER, so of course he's fabulous!!!) Due to the recent onset of perpetual and relentless hot flashiness, I have decided that I cannot stand my hair on my neck one. more. day. or I will rip it all out by the roots myself. Ahem. So, ladies, I need your opinion...but I need it today, okay? Your morning is my middle of the night, so if you vote morning or midday, that'll probably be good.

Here is my "before" picture. I haven't had a hair cut in two months, so I'm feeling pretty shaggy. Since you are all my friends, I am counting on you NOT to notice my old lady arm, which is looking more and more like I remember my grandma's arm looking. A little flappy, if you know what I mean. Also disregard my clown blouse, as it is the most comfortable blouse I own for weathering said hot flashes. Thank you in advance for your selective vision.

I have never been a fan of short hair on me, but I'm thinking that now is the time. Here are the possibilities:

Someone from "the brunette dimension," wherever that is. She looks amazingly well for traipsing around interdimensionally--I myself look like crap when I just go by airplane. Anyway, I wish they had someone more my age in that brunette dimension that could show me what it would look like on a fifty-year old. ANYTHING looks good on a teenager--how can you tell anything by these magazines?

This one is sort of cute, too...but again, how would it look on an old lady with glasses and flappy arms? No, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference between the interdimensional brunette hairdo and this perky little earthling's hairdo, but her ears are covered much better in this one. I don't like looking at my ears. I don't have ugly ears, I just don't want to see them every day.

The advantage to this second haircut is that it can also do this:

But this is what my hair actually looks like when I get off a plane. Somehow it doesn't look nearly as cute on me as it does on this girl.

So what do you think? Haircut 1 or Haircut 2, with or without jet lag? Vote on the sidebar to the right. I'll let Herman know what you think!

Three "by the ways":

By the way, Calico Quilter, I'm having trouble emailing you. Is your email address correct on your profile? Let me know at lisa [at] lisaboyer [dot] com.

And by the way, didn't Chikezie steal the show on Idol tonight? I thought he was outstanding!! I still love Jason and David, too, but poor David had a bad night. Out of the girls, I liked Brooke tonight.

And also by the way, speaking of idols, did you see this in the news today?:

Dawn Wells aka Mary Anne, my Gilligan's Island idol, arrested for erratic driving, failing the breathalyzer test, and having marijuana in her car. See? That's what happens when you become a flappy-armed grandma and try to give up coconut cream pie. Ladies, let this be a lesson to you. This is what happens when you skip the pie. Never skip the pie.

I sympathize, as I too have the hot flash syndrome. AAK! The shorter the better - it'll grow back if you don't like it, and you can cool off in the water and shake it dry.
p.s. I finally began a blog and posted a picture of my first Hula Hut. I really am going to make the rest, but I spent all weekend shoveling snow and doing alterations for my coworkers.

Good luck with the haircut!

Give yourself a break! Your arms look great! I want my arms to look like that -and I'm 35!
As for the haircut, I relly like #2... Also like the fact that you can change it so dramatically. Also, it's "longish" short hair, so if you absolutely hate having short hair, it'll grow back sooner :-)
And no! Never give up the pie!!

You won't regret shorter hair; I've worn it for years and it is so carefree. I voted for the brunette version, but I wear it even shorter than that. Give Herman the vibe or personality you want instead, like a cross between Pink and Sharon Stone from a few years ago. Or a boy cut that still makes me look feminine.

And, like the previous poster wrote, if you don't like it, it will grow back. A former stylist gave me the best advice years ago: Think of your hair as an accessory that can be changed, and not an appendage that can't!

Good luck.

I voted...

caveat I don't care for a cut that you have to keep cutting...

So I voted for the buy another magazine - are there any less fiddley dos being done?

Oh, I shoudl have mentioned - that I sport a wash & wear do...

(I like the cut that you sport on your flickr profile...)

Big sigh......oh the hair, the hair, the hair, the hair ...... I'm in the process of doing the same thing .... again ..... I cannot STAND to have hair in my face .... drives me NUTS !!!! and really gets in my way at work! so.... I've gone through short, short hair, then long enough to always pull back in a ponytail, then short, short hair again (which then is a royal PAIN to grow out , ESPECIALLY bangs .... then you have to go through the barrette or hair band stage and look like a 50 year old 3rd grader .... so right now, I'm at the long hair always pulled back in a ponytail .... which is OFF my neck and OUT of my face .... but I'm looking kind of DOWDY and librarianish (not that librarians really look like "librarians" anymore...) SO, again I'm looking through my file (yes a I have a file) of pictures cut out of magazines that I've taken to work in the past to get everybody's opinion and then taken to the hair place ..... should I go short again .... or leave it long and pulled back ? I'm definately NOT into messing around with my hair for more that 2 seconds anymore. That first picture I think is VERY cute .... but again, like you said , that chick is about 18 .... and , no matter how much I pay attention to how the hair person styles my hair, I can NEVER get it to look like how they did it ..... NEVER !! (except for pulling it back in a ponytail....)

....OK, re:American Idol .... oh, I felt so bad for cute little David A.(he's such a cute kid). ...and I agree Chikeezee was good, so was that guy that sang Eleanor Rigby (is it Elanor, or Helen?)... and the Irish girl was good and so was Brook (I've liked her from Day 1 ... anybody that sings Carol King and Carly Simon are OK in my book).

.....AND, re: that erratic driving thing and flunking the breath test, etc ...... just went over the edge .... deep edge ..... flipping miracle it didn't happen sooner ....

I vote for 2 as it looks like I could maybe actually style it. The others are a little too out there for me, but I am older than you....lol I am so glad I missed the hot flashes. Must not run in my family....

I voted for #1. I think it's cute no matter what your age! My theory is that a younger hairstyle can make you feeler younger! Just don't dress like a teenager!

I know your thoughts on ears. Mine stick out - imagine Dumbo on a smaller scale. My hair appt. was yesterday and I'm more concerned with the coloring right now. No matter how cute the cut, grey roots just aren't cool! My hair is cut in the popular short bob with the angled sides and it is fine as long as it is not humid. Just got back from FL and had bad hair the whole trip! I'm thinking that when I get ready to go grey (not sure when I'll do that - could be a idea for the vote on the blog) I'll go with a short cut like #1.

Look forward to seeing a pic of your new do!

Hi Lisa, I like #1. I've been wearing short hair for ages... even before the 'mini spa treatments' began for me. We've recently moved and I haven't had a cut since November... oh my it's beginning to drive me nuts!
Leave some length on top and you can do a whacky spikey thing if it suits you - but thin out the sides and you'll weather the storm's a lot cooler - it also allows the sweat to dry faster! LOL
You might actually find yourself telling him the next time to cut it a bit shorter next time.
Clown blouse - ahhh but at least you have the chest to fill one out - it would look like a sack on me... because well you know I take after my dad - he doesn't have boobs either! :)

Go for #2 if you don't want the ears to show. For a period in my life I wore very short hair and loved it. For my *mature* face these days I prefer my short bob with a little layering. Which reminds me, I'm overdue for a trim myself.

Gotta be #1 - that's going to look fantastic on you! My best advise for 'power surges' is, never get out of the water. Pool, bathtub, lake, river, pond or puddle. As long as it's cool water you'll be fine. Oh what? Doesn't work for you? Me neither, but it's a goal.....lol!
Now how do you know Mary Anne passed on the pie? You don't know what she may have baked into that pie, and maybe she had half the pie! If I ate half a pie I might look like that too..........

cinnamongirl93 said...

I do like the first haircut. What about a stacked concave bob? Kind of like the one Jenny McCarthy has? I think it would look fantastic on you here's a link:http://www.hair.becomegorgeous.com/celebrity_hair/jenny_mccarthy_hairstyles-227.html. See what you think.
I really thought Chickezie did great. I also love the irish gal and Brooke were great too.
Good luck with your big desion. Make sure to show us pictures!

I like #1, I, like you have the hair problem going on. Until a few years ago (After my mid-life B-Day) I had very long hair, I went short, shorter and shorter. Now I'm back to letting it grown. Last week I got it into a ponytail again. Is that bad for a 55+ lady?

And those mini furnace blast?! Aren't they annoying?

Go for some highlights too while you are there, that can perk a quilter up!

My middle of the night is yours too--for some reason I keep waking up at 3 and can't go back to sleep. If Herman does good I would like his number.
Our Idol watch gang have all predicted who will be the last two. I picked Brooke and hippie Jason. My dark horse is the rocker from Missouri.
It looks like you have lots of thick hair so I think you can pull off any of the styles.

Jeanne said...

I like haircut #1 the best. David A. is my pick for Idol. He just had an off night.

Mar said...

Am I too late? I like # 1 and I still like the guy with the dreadlocks, but he could lose them if ya know what I mean. And Brook, I cried with her. Ummmm I wouldn't have noticed your arms if you hadn't said anything, so don't be so hard on yourself sweetie!

Sally said...

I'd have to go with #2. I can't stand hair on my ears or my face...I have bangs but they don't touch my eyebrows! I'm always hot so I always have my hair up off my neck (ponytail or bun)...DH really doesn't like my hair short..

Loved David up till last night...off night for him. The guy from Missouri is pretty good, too.

Number two -- even if you're over 50! Just because the calendar says we are uh hemmm, over 50, , slow, unexciting ladies! Be brave, venture forth. And I'll tell you privately what to do about bat wing arms, but if mine looked as good as yours, I wouldn't fret.

Kristin said...

funny thing - I recently cut my long hair to the style that you have now! I wanted to go shorter, but I thought it best to go in stages. I like option 2 because it has some length in the front. the first one is a bit short in the front, so it might limit styling options.

regarding your arm, I *so* did not notice any "bingo wings" as I call my flaps.

good luck and tell Herman we are all watching his work!!!

First off, my biggest piece of advice is to buy a mirror!! You look fab!!! :)

Second of all, I'd totally leave your 'do the way it is!! It's flattering, and makes you look softer than any of those other 'dos would. If you have to have a cut, I'd just get'er shaped.

Are you going to post a pic of you with your new 'do? :)

Warm, quilty hugs!!
Connie :)
(who just finished your second book -- after the first one, of course -- and LOVED it!!! More, more, more, more!!! Please!! :)

I vote #2 without the jet lag. Looks nice and sleek but you still have the option to jet lag it up and make it fun too if you want.

Of course I've had the same haircut for 15 years so we see how well I adapt to change.

As someone who has really really thick and curly hair, and is of a certain age, I can sympathise.
As to choice - I think #2 is lovely! I just couldnt have that myself because of said curls! LOL!

susan said...

i like #1...but both have lots that hang down in the front, they are just brush aside...i can picture you sticking out your lower lip and constantly blowing those hairs out of your face...just something to consider.. dont you trust herman's advise? he knows and loves you and wouldnt butcher your hair. good luck and you will look great no matter what you do...

Anonymous said...

I love the first haircut choice but with not as much spike to it. I'm also a hairdresser and fellow quilter. Also just remember it will ALWAYS grow back. Can't wait to see the new do pic.

BusybeeDebQuilts said...

I voted for #1 ... it'll grow out if you don't like it. Chances are you won't see your ears unless you sit looking in to a mirror all day ... which I supposed that you could do, not that there's anything wrong with that :-).

Maybe Herman will have a special do just for you!

Love the new hair styles. I've voted for the first one, mainly 'cause I like the colour.
Good luck with Herman.
I will not give up pie if that is what comes next.
What silly people but it does prove they are human too. (And Silly)

I can't pick one of the new haircuts because I like the one you have! Maybe you could get a "trim" or "shaped up" ---oh-well, I'm anxious to see what you and Herman decide. I agree Chikeze was a surprise hit last night! Like where did he come from? It's getting interesting--if not always entertaining. :o)

tina said...

Well heck, I'm probably too late to chime in. You know how I hate to be asked my opinion and discover that I am too boogerin' late to offer it! ACK!

I know that Herman will prevail! He is a quilter after all and undoubtedly loves you so I'm sure he will not lead you astray.

Can't wait to see it! I just got my hair cut and am so happy now that I have once again given up the need to have longer hair.

BY ALL MEANS CUT IT ALL OFFFFFFF AND THEN MAKE SURE IT IS CURRENT, UPDATED, AND FUNKY , YOU WILL LOOK YOUNGER CUTE AND FEEL FREE....ENJOY IT , I DID IT AFTER HAVING AN ELIZABETHAN TYPE CURLY LOOOOOONG HAIR, CHOPPED IT LIKE MIA FARROW IN ROSEMARY'S BABY, AND IT IS EVEN SHORTER NOW, THE KEY IS EDGY AND FUNKY FOR CHANGE...

Anonymous said...

Absolutley the FIRST picture or shorter. Enjoy

Option 1. You need the highth that it gives you. As it grows out, it will cover your ears. Easy care. I live in Eastern Oregon. Hot flashes came in handy during the cold, cold winter.

And remember, if you want to have a new 'do, you don't need to have a drastic cut! Whenever my 'do feels boring and same-old-same-old, I get the color freshened and get a few streaks ... a good hair colorist will put the streaks in in such a way that it REALLY flatters your face and softens your features (something I'd look horrible without!!)!!

In any case, Lisa, you're beautiful and don't need ornamentation ... and you look great in all the 'dos I've seen you in!! Great face, great features!! Whatever you choose will look great on you!!

Warm quilty hugs!!
Connie :)

Definitely the first one. It looks like it would be easier to style. I'm all about easy. The less I have to mess with my hair, the faster I can get to my sewing room.

The Calico Quilter said...

But did you notice the fine print in the second picture: "Kept well trimmed...." Is this a good idea, given self-professed shagginess and delayed haircutting?

Oh, and -- Free Mary Anne! Free Mary Anne! Anyone up for picketing?

Denise (Nour) said...

You have a cute face so you could probably pull off #1. My sister has this cut and it really looks good on her and she's 52! But she has fine hair and she has to get it trimmed every 3 weeks. I also like the short layered bob look, taken up off the neck in the back. That would be safer!!!

Anonymous said...

Hi Lisa, I read your book and like it very much. I like haircut number 1 for you or even simpler than that, just go with s safe suburban housewife look, it screams old lady haircut if it is "safe".

Anonymous said...

Sorry about that previous post , it should read DONT GO with the "safe suburban" housewife look, it Screams OLD LADY!!!

Busy Little Quilter said...

Isn't it ironic that we were just talking about Gilligans Island the other day? I agree: never skip the pie. How old is she anyway? I think maybe she worried too much about flabby arms and hot flashes!

I didn't get to vote; I'll go see what "do" you decided on. I'm sure Herman did well. He's a quilter, afterall!

Anonymous said...

Too late to vote, darn... but you picked my pick anyway.

I have to wonder now what was in the coconut cream pies Mary Anne kept crankin' out and why everyone loved them so much!

PS... I love your bathroom and those darling little quilts you've got hanging there!

I'm terrible when it comes to hair, so I'm going to leave that alone.

As far as AI goes, I'm all about David Cook. He's my favorite and I really hope he makes it to the finals. Having said that Chikezie really did rock this week. I was so impressed!
