Recycled Denim Bag

This jeans skirt suddenly shrunk in the dryer, so I decided to re-purpose it. (All my clothes are doing that lately. Must be a thermostat problem with the dryer, eh? Nod your head yes. Thank you.) It was very simple--I just cut off the hem in one long piece, then whacked the skirt in half horizontally and vertically. I did some cute little appliques while the pieces were flat , then sewed the side and bottom. The hem became the strap.

Here's the unglamorous back side:
I added a red lining:
The cute little appliques were adapted from Lisa Bergene's book. They're just Steam-a-Seamed and machine blanket-stitched. Good enough.

I originally made this bag as a bottled water carrier, which it does very well. However, I've decided that it really is a magical little shape for all sorts of things! I carry a very small purse, so when I pay bills or go to the bank, it's perfect for all those envelopes that don't fit in my purse. It's also great for my cell phone because I can just reach into it without having to unzip anything--and it's deep enough so nothing falls out. I love this little bag!

Here it is in action!!

See my action shot? This was caught using a very high speed camera, obviously. Because I'm really moving like the wind. It's sort of a superpower, really. I'm not really a dork doing a stupid pose on my lawn. (Nod your head yes. Thank you.)

In other news, my cat finally slept on something I made for him to sleep on instead of getting cat hair all over my current project. He was probably just confused, but there he is.

"Is she done with this? Oh, my mistake. Where's that unhairy quilt she's working on?"

Just another sparkling day in paradise. This one is an "I Spy" adventure. Can you find my husband on his riding lawnmower? How about the white egret following him? Hint: Click on the picture to enlarge it.

The Happy Hula Hut drawing is tomorrow at midnight. Today is your last chance to enter. Comment at the bottom of the "A Very Happy Hula Hut Day" post and you'll be entered. Good luck!

"the hem became the strap."

pure brilliance.

and I made a bag similarly shaped and sized (from suit cuff cut-offs and shirt sleeves and a woven belt for the strap. it is a very useful size.

Your bag is a really good idea! Yesterday evening I took one of my UFOs and I think I can this summer give the quilted tablecloth to my sister. It is Kaffe Fassett´s pattern...

Clever creation and so timely with all the recycling going on. Drat these clothes dryers that make our clothes too tight, they're everywhere it seems. Found your DH and it appears he will be kept busy for a while with all that lawn to mow. But in paradise one has to have something to do, right? What a lovely place to have to mow grass I would say.

I love your action shot!!! the lining is so cute. I have made a repurposed jean bag too but used a pattern from The Perfect Bag. I almost never throw out jeans.

I could not find your hubby without enlarging the photo. You sure do have a sprawling lawn in paradise. How lovely!

Oh you make me laugh, love the "high speed" action. What a wonderful idea, may I borrow it as I too have a denim skirt that I don't use. I could use it as my bottle bag for the gym or my mail bag. Then I too could fly like the wind with my high speed camera.
Love your scenery. I will come and mow your lawn only when you get that ride-on mower though.

Yep, I understand how dreadful it is when the dryer goes out of whack and new skirts, shorts and pants are all necessary. Yep, I understand all right; it must be aging... the dryer, not me!! The bag is inspired. Nice action shot, I'm impressed.

Looks like we all bought the same dryer. Love the bag!

Good thing there was only one egret or you'd have to pipe in the Alfred Hitchcock theme music.

Gorgeous home there in paradise!

That blanket is beautiful! I have to tell you my dryer does the same thing except a week later my clothes magically fit again, but wait another week and they won't It's good to know I'm not alone having such a moody dryer and all. Oh yes and I demand more action shots, I could barely make out the fact that there was a person there, such a blur.

I LOVE YOUR ACTION SHOT! That is just tooooo cute!

My cats are always scoping out the unhairy quilts too. Your cat gets big brownie points for sleeping on the one you made him (which is way beautiful BTW!).

What a great little bag. I like the blanket for your cat - what luxury for the cat to have those beautiful colours to curl up on!
